Writing Assignment #4: The Novel Synopsis

A novel synopsis is a summary of the plot, characters, and themes of a novel. It typically provides an overview of the story without going into too much detail. A good novel synopsis should give the reader a sense of what the book is about, including the main conflict or challenge facing the characters, the setting, and any important themes or ideas explored in the story. It should be concise and engaging and should ideally make the reader want to read the book to find out more.

The novel synopsis may also be used as a marketing tool to promote your book to potential readers, agents, or publishers. However, I also find it useful to write a first draft of a synopsis as part of the novel planning process.

Writing Sample

The following is a synopsis of a novel that we’ll call The Songbird’s Echo[1]which uses the Hero’s Journey story structure to move the story forward. Notice how the single sentences used in some of the previous outlines we explored have now been expanded to a couple of sentences for each section of the story’s structure. With each new assignment you complete in the planning process, you will come a little bit closer to having written your first draft!

The Songbird’s Echo is a captivating contemporary novel that weaves together elements of fantasy, adventure, and self-discovery, following the classic hero’s journey structure. Set in a world where music holds magical powers, it explores the transformative journey of a young musician, Aria, as she embarks on a quest to restore harmony to a fractured land.

1. The Call to Adventure: Aria, a talented but self-doubting musician, discovers a mystical instrument hidden deep within an ancient forest. Its enchanting melody resonates within her soul, beckoning her to embark on a journey that promises both personal growth and a chance to save her world from the brink of darkness.
2. Refusal of the Call: Overwhelmed by self-doubt and the magnitude of the task before her, Aria initially hesitates. Fearing the challenges that lie ahead, she questions her own abilities and doubts her worthiness as the chosen one. However, with the encouragement of her mentor, a wise old musician, Aria finds the courage to embrace her destiny and sets off on her quest.
3. Crossing the Threshold: Aria ventures beyond the boundaries of her familiar village, stepping into a vast and magical realm filled with extraordinary creatures, captivating landscapes, and diverse musical communities. She encounters both allies and adversaries along her path, each with their own agendas and contributions to her journey.
4. Trials and Challenges: As Aria progresses on her quest, she faces a series of trials that test her musical prowess, inner strength, and resilience. She must master new musical techniques, solve riddles, and confront her deepest fears. Along the way, she discovers the importance of collaboration, friendship, and the power of music to heal and inspire.
5. Meeting the Mentor: Throughout her journey, Aria encounters a mysterious and enigmatic mentor, a legendary musician known as Maestro, who guides her with wisdom and profound musical teachings. Maestro not only instructs Aria in the ways of harmonizing the magical melodies but also imparts valuable life lessons about self-belief, authenticity, and the true essence of music.
6. The Abyss: In a climactic moment, Aria faces a formidable adversary, the Discordant, an embodiment of darkness and disharmony. This confrontation challenges her to summon all her strength, courage, and musical mastery to overcome the malevolent forces that threaten to consume her world. It is a battle not only against external evil but also against her own doubts and limitations.
7. Transformation: Through her trials and the guidance of her mentor, Aria undergoes a profound transformation. She sheds her insecurities, embracing her unique musical voice and discovering the true potential of her talent. Aria’s journey becomes a metaphorical reflection of her own personal growth, as she learns to trust herself, embrace her individuality, and inspire others through her music.
8. Return and Resolution: Having triumphed over the Discordant and restored harmony to the land, Aria returns to her village as a changed person. She shares her newfound wisdom and the transformative power of music, inspiring others to embrace their own unique gifts and cultivate harmony in their lives. Aria’s journey serves as a testament to the enduring power of music to connect souls, heal wounds, and create a more harmonious world.

Writing Assignment #4: Novel synopsis

Once your outline is complete, use it as a guide as you expand your idea into a more substantial novel synopsis. Writing a novel synopsis before writing the novel draft can be a useful exercise in planning and organizing your story. Once you have a rough outline of the story, go through each section that you outlined in writing assignment #3 and flesh it out with more detail. Here are some steps you can follow to write a novel synopsis:

1. Focus on the main character’s journey: Make sure to highlight the protagonist’s journey and growth throughout the story, as this will be the main focus of your synopsis.
2. Keep it concise: Your synopsis should be no more than one or two paragraphs per section, so focus on the most important details and avoid getting bogged down in unnecessary details or subplots.
3. Revise and refine: Once you have written your initial synopsis, take some time to revise and refine it. Make sure that the pacing is strong, the character motivations are clear, and that you have captured the overall essence of your story.

Following these steps, you can create a strong and effective synopsis that will help you to stay focused and organized as you write your novel.

By now you may have noticed that each new writing assignment has developed your story in both breadth and depth. You began with a basic concept and premise that you then expanded into a novel outline. The outline was the skeleton of your story, and you have now begun to flesh it out into something that is beginning to resemble a novel.
