The Insomniacs by Allison Winn Scotch: When sleepless strangers become unlikely allies

In The Insomniacs by Allison Winn Scotch, releasing April 7, 2026, four strangers find themselves drawn together during the quietest hours of the night, gathering at an all-night diner in New York City to talk through the worries that keep them awake. What begins as a series of late-night conversations gradually turns into a fragile friendship—until one of them disappears, turning their insomnia-fueled support group into an amateur investigation.

The setup is appealing right away. Sybil, a recently empty-nested mom; Zeke, a professional baseball player sidelined by injury; Julian, a reserved retiree trying to repair his relationship with his daughter; and Betty, the guarded diner waitress who serves their endless coffee, couldn’t be more different from one another. Yet insomnia—and the strange intimacy of late-night conversations—creates the space for them to open up in ways they can’t with the people already in their lives.

The Briars by Sarah Crouch: When a mountain town’s secrets turn into a predictable romance

A thick chill crept through the fir trees the moment I stepped into the pages of The Briars — I could almost smell the damp pine needles underfoot in Lake Lumin. In The Briars by Sarah Crouch, an atmospheric backdrop, a lone game warden fleeing her past, and the ominous presence of both a cougar and a hidden murderer promise a taut thriller.

Coming into the novel, I was mesmerized. The descriptions of the Pacific Northwest setting — moss-clad trees, misty mountain ridges, ancient forest trails — transported me so completely I was ready to pack my car up and head to Lake Lumin myself. Annie Heston, newly employed as a game warden, chasing whispers of a cougar sighting: that narrative worked. Her patrols through the woods, the sense of isolation, the danger — I wanted to linger there.

Author Interview

Author interview with romantasy writer E.A.M. Trofimenkoff

Inspired by Anne Bonny and Mary Read, two of her all-time favorite female pirates, E. A. M. Trofimenkoff is the author of the Dark Depths duology as well as their contemporary romance, You and I Collide.

In A Kiss of the Siren’s Song, two women disguised as men board a pirate ship: one set on revenge, the other escaping land and the bounty on her head. The two of them quickly find themselves in the middle of a voyage to find the world’s most dangerous weapon: the Kraken’s Fang.

Even worse, their evil captain has a far more nefarious plot in mind. Can the two unravel the sea of secrets, and save the world? Or will their budding feelings for each other result in their downfall?

Q: What/who were your early literary influences, and how do you think their writing has shaped you as a storyteller today?
A: I think The Hunger Games was the first book to make me truly fall in love with reading. So much so that I still remember exactly where I was when I read it for the first time, and every year when it snows, it reminds me of that trip, and I have to pick up the series and re-read it. To this date, I’ve read the original trilogy over thirty times, and it remains my favourite series of all time. Now that I am writing my own stories, I am inspired to write complex characters who aren’t always loveable, who go through their challenges and come back with scars to show for them, and it’s given me the courage to explore difficult narratives that involve impossible decisions and the consequences that accompany them.

Author interview with dark fantasy writer Morgan Reilly

Morgan Reilly is the author of The Dark Library Series, a seven-book YA dark fantasy retelling of fairy tales.

In The Book of Water, the first book in The Dark Library series, mermaid Celine and human Owen form an unlikely alliance in the midst of a war between their peoples. But as they grow closer, they must navigate the treacherous waters of love and betrayal. In this dark fantasy retelling of The Little Mermaid, Celine and Owen will risk everything to seek their revenge-but their hearts may be the price they pay.

This story is described as, “The Little Mermaid + To Kill A Kingdom with Count of Monte Cristo vibes.”

Q: What/who were your early literary influences, and how do you think their writing has shaped you as a storyteller today?
A: I love this question! I grew up loving mysteries and fantasies, essentially cutting my teeth on Nancy Drew and books about magic. I also adored the Baby Sitters Club (the Scholastic Book Fair was my favorite time of year). That’s when I started to write my own stories, centering around characters and the events that shaped them. I’ve loved character-driven stories ever since I could read, so those are the types of stories I love to tell.

Author interview with fantasy writer Cerynn McCain

Fantasy author Cerynn McCain returns to the themes of trauma and healing in all of her works. She says, “My characters break. Some don’t heal. Some harden. And some take a very long time, and deal with PTSD, and find their way. I work very hard to show that struggle and that victory as relatably as I can, because for myself personally, I didn’t find a lot of stories where I could heal along with them.”

In Inhibited, the first novel in McCain’s The Abandoned Crown Series, Alice’s life ended when she was captured. Being tortured for thirteen years left her small and afraid, but when the guard assigned to her torture helped her escape, she was given a brief glimpse of hope.

Until she forgot.

Now hiding in a city full of its own secrets, Alice must work hard to remember why she came here, and whether she herself is a trap.

Q: What/who were your early literary influences, and how do you think their writing has shaped you as a storyteller today?
A: Oh, I always credit Tolkien and C.S. Lewis with my drive to tell stories today. I always loved how they wove their allegories so well into the stories that their books couldn’t stand without them, but so subtly that they could be missed if you weren’t looking for them. It always inspired me to do what I could to write my own tales and worlds as well.

Author interview with romance writer Regina Sage

Regina Sage, author of the Underwater series, says, “Love is a daily magic we can choose to use, and in my books it defeats evil every time.”

In Ocean’s Embrace, the first novel in Sage’s Underwater series, Leanne just wanted to go on vacation after a nasty divorce, but an off-season tropical storm complicates her plans to reenter the dating pool… By throwing her into the deep. Sven just wanted to complete his underwater expedition and get paid, but when his portal opens in the middle of a shipwreck, he collects a kind of treasure he never expected.

Q: Who are some of your favorite authors that you feel were influential in your work? What impact have they had on your writing?
A: I honestly think the authors in my writing groups are the biggest influence on my work. By workshopping scenes and plot lines, sharing beta reads, and engaging in other forms of feedback, I think we all share a commitment to the craft and to the community that allows us to grow in ways we couldn’t otherwise. Participating in various author groups with traditionally published, indie, or as-yet-unpublished authors has been the greatest influence on my perspectives, skill, and attitudes surrounding my books.

Author interview with Melissa R. Collings

Melissa R. Collings is the award-winning author of the bittersweet love story, The False Flat. Before Melissa started writing, she worked as a surgical physician associate in Nashville, where one of her favorite procedures was reconstructing a lower-lumbar tattoo after a back surgery. Her stories, like her, are always a mix: light and dark, laughter and tears, outlandish and grounded, beautiful and ugly, glitter and charcoal smears. Her interests are way too varied; her imagination never fails to get her into trouble; and she lives by her life philosophy: nothing is impossible, and everything is better with glitter—except surgical wounds.

Q: When did you first catch the writing bug? What drove you to persist?
A: I’m originally a surgical Physician Associate (medical provider). I worked 50-60 hours per week doing spine surgery, rounding on hospital patients, and seeing patients in the clinic. I enjoyed my job, but when my husband and I were expecting our first child, I decided to take a long hiatus from medical work and stay home to raise our daughter. I’d worked since I was very young, so this was a steep adjustment for me. I needed something for myself, so I turned to a psychological suspense novel I’d started before college.

Back then, I’d been working as a receptionist and had a lot of down time. I had an idea for a book and started writing it to fill my time. I didn’t think anything would come of it. But when I was at home with a newborn, I picked that novel up again, and I discovered a whole new world.

2014 NaNoWriMo Trashy Romance Novel: The final challenge

English: Cows eating trash, Jaipur, India.
Is your trashy romance novel destined for the trash heap? Or is it worth saving? Either way, I hope you will view your 2014 NaNoWriMo novel project as a success. | English: Cows eating trash, Jaipur, India. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Now that your trashy romance novel is complete, what are you going to do with it? From where I’m sitting, I think you have a couple of options:

  1. Trash it. It is “trashy,” after all. Every successful author seems to have at least one novel sitting in a drawer someplace that they never want to see the light of day. Maybe this one can be yours. If that’s the case, think of this as a rite of passage that even the greatest authors have endured. You are now officially one step closer to joining their ranks. So, toss that trashy novel aside and move on to your next great idea!
  2. Polish it up a bit and sell it. Trashy or not, your manuscript might have merit. Review a handful of published romance novels and determine whether yours might be publishable with a bit of editing. Then, go for it!
  3. Analyze the crap out of it. Pretend like someone else wrote this steaming heap and tear it apart. Use this manuscript to help you determine where your writing weaknesses lie. Then you can use the information to determine what strategies to keep using and which ones need work. Just remember to take some time to look for the good as well. The fun thing about fast writing is that, while a lot of what you write will turn out to be crap, once in a while you will stumble upon a gem of glittering prose that might be turned into a great literary novel with a bit of elbow grease. So, tear that sucker apart and see if there is anything worth keeping.
  4. Develop your characters and turn it into something better. Honestly, ask yourself if this shallow tripe has any potential. What would happen if you gave your characters some not-so-romantic names and threw in a few real-life problems? Could you possibly develop your story into something a step above the average Harlequin and turn it into the next Nicholas Sparks-ish novel?
