We Already Dug the Grave by Emma C. Wells: A kitschy Southern gothic thriller

I wanted to love We Already Dug the Grave. After all, I absolutely adored Emma C. Wells’ debut novel, This Girl’s a Killer, so when I saw that Wells had another book coming out, it was an automatic must-read for me. Unfortunately, while We Already Dug the Grave has plenty of the ingredients I loved in her debut, it never quite captures the same sharp wit or confidence.

We Already Dug the Grave follows estranged sisters Milly and Francis, who have spent years apart after something terrible happened in a Tennessee meadow. Milly has always been the odd one, with an ability to divine the future through tea leaves. But lately, the tea leaves have gone silent, which might seem like a blessing considering how bleak Milly’s life has become.

We Are for the Dark by Gretchen McNeil: An unsettling descent into Newfoundland horror

What if a missing-person investigation led you to an island where nothing is quite what it seems—and something ancient beneath the ground is very, very hungry? Gretchen McNeil’s We Are for the Dark, releasing September 1, 2026, takes that premise and turns it into a fast-paced supernatural horror story filled with isolated communities, religious unease, strange traditions, and a growing sense that the people arriving on the island may have made a terrible mistake.

McNeil’s novel begins with Father Shane Ryan, a recently ordained Catholic priest with an unusual past as an FBI analyst. When a priest disappears from a remote island off the coast of Newfoundland, Cardinal Jacobs calls on Ryan to investigate. At roughly the same time, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary constable Miriam Rideout becomes concerned about a frantic call she received from the missing priest. When her superiors refuse to authorize a wellness check, Miriam takes matters into her own hands and travels to the island herself. Naturally, the two eventually end up together—and neither is particularly thrilled about it.

The Seekers of Deer Creek by Thao Thai is an emotionally rich literary novel that blends family drama, historical mystery, and a journey across continents into a compelling exploration of identity. While the search for a lost painting provides the novel’s momentum, the true mystery lies within a family’s silences and the stories left untold across generations.

The Women in White by Sarah Pekkanen: A compelling blend of mystery and the paranormal

Sarah Pekkanen’s The Women in White offers an engaging blend of psychological suspense, historical mystery, and paranormal intrigue. While the novel explores unsettling ethical questions about scientific experimentation, it remains an accessible page-turner with crisp prose, short chapters, and enough twists to keep readers invested until the final pages. If you’re looking for a thriller that combines a decades-old conspiracy with supernatural elements while remaining easy to read, this one is well worth adding to your list.

Lady X by Molly Fader: A fierce, timely novel about female rage and generational rebellion

There are moments when a novel feels eerily timed to the world outside its pages. Lady X by Molly Fader is one of those books—a story that begins like a glossy domestic drama before transforming into something much angrier, more ambitious, and far more thought-provoking.

At first, I honestly wondered if I had picked up the wrong book. The present-day storyline introduces Margot Cooper, the seemingly perfect wife of a famous actor who has built a public image around traditional family values. It initially feels like the sort of suburban housewife thriller we’ve seen many times before: wealthy people, social media personas, carefully curated lives, and secrets waiting to explode. Then everything changes.

Unreliable Narrator by Araminta Hall: A literary thriller about the stories we tell ourselves

What if the story that ruined your life wasn’t the one that actually happened? Araminta Hall’s Unreliable Narrator begins with the promise of a psychological thriller, but what unfolds is something even more interesting: a deeply literary examination of memory, guilt, identity, and the stories people construct to survive. While there are certainly moments of suspense, readers looking for a fast-paced thriller may find themselves surprised by the novel’s quieter, more introspective approach. Personally, I think that’s exactly where the book shines.

Ten years after the violent end to a summer spent working as assistant to celebrated novelist Ambrose “Rosie” Glencourt at the isolated Shadowlands estate, Hope Jenkins has resigned herself to a lonely existence. Convinced she deserves the life she’s living, she numbs herself with alcohol and isolation—until she discovers that Rosie’s bestselling novel is, in essence, her own life story. Not only has he exposed the darkest secret she’s carried for a decade, but he’s profited from it and is preparing to tell the story all over again. From there, Hall explores not simply what happened at Shadowlands, but how everyone involved has rewritten the past to suit themselves.
