Finish Writing Your Novel Now!

What are the steps for publishing your novel independently?

Independently publishing your novel offers unparalleled creative control and the opportunity to bring your story to readers on your terms. Unlike traditional publishing, where a publishing house manages editing, design, marketing, and distribution, independent publishing puts those responsibilities in your hands. This path allows you to set your own schedule, retain full rights to your work, and earn higher royalties per sale.

In this series, we’ve reviewed the planning, writing, evaluating, and revising steps of the novel writing process. Now it’s time to publish your novel!

While it requires dedication and strategic planning, self-publishing is an empowering way to share your voice with the world. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the independent publishing process and launch your novel successfully.

  1. Edit and revise your manuscript: Before you begin the publishing process, make sure your manuscript is in the best shape possible. This may involve working with an editor or beta readers to help you improve your story and correct errors.
  2. Format your manuscript: Your manuscript will need to be formatted for publication, which may involve converting it to an ebook format and/or designing a print layout.
  3. Design your book cover: Your book cover is an important marketing tool, so take the time to create a professional cover that will attract readers. If you are not in possession of design skills, then find someone to do it for you. Designing your book cover is not a task that you want to muddle through on your own if you don’t know what you’re doing.
  4. Choose a publishing platform: There are many online publishing platforms available for independent authors, such as Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble Publish, and Kobo Writing Life. Research the different platforms and choose the one that best suits your needs.
  5. Upload your manuscript and book cover: Once your manuscript is formatted and your cover is designed, you can upload them to your chosen publishing platform.
  6. Set your price and royalties: You’ll need to decide on a price for your book and choose the royalty percentage you’ll receive from each sale. In some ways, these will be dependent on your publishing platform. However, most platforms allow some flexibility in pricing and royalties.
  7. Publish and promote your book: Once your book is published, it’s up to you to promote it and reach potential readers. This may involve marketing your book on social media, running book promotions, and reaching out to book bloggers and reviewers.

It’s important to note that the publishing process may vary depending on the platform and the specific requirements for each format. Make sure to do your research and follow the guidelines provided by the publishing platform you choose.

Book Summary

When Jack Utley loses his daughter just as his business is about to soar, it seems he’s traded financial gain for Callie’s life. Now that Jack has been forced to reflect on everything he has to lose, he resolves to do better. He’s determined to spend more time at home with his family and repair the relationships that have suffered over the years while he’s been so focused on work.
