Step two of the novel writing process: The first draft (and Writing Assignment #6)

During the last few weeks, we’ve spent a lot of time on the planning stage of the novel writing process, and for good reason. Taking the time to develop a well-planned story will make writing the first draft of your novel seem like a stroll through the garden. When it comes to the drafting stage of the novel writing process, the most important piece of advice I can give you is to just start writing and don’t stop until it’s done.

The time has come to embark on the next leg of your novel writing journey! Image generated using artificial intelligence.

However, you’d probably like a bit more advice than that, so here are some helpful hints and tips to get you through this stage of the novel writing process:

  1. Start with a rough draft: Don’t worry about making the draft perfect, just get your ideas on paper. You can refine and edit it later.
  2. Focus on the big picture: Keep in mind the overall story arc and make sure that each scene and chapter is moving the story forward toward the desired conclusion. If you’ve done your homework, you know exactly what your story arc is, and what each chapter will be about!
  3. Follow your outline/synopsis/summary: Use your outline, synopsis, and/or summary as a guide and work through each scene and chapter in order. This can help you stay focused and on track.
  4. Be flexible: It’s okay to deviate from your outline if you find that the story is taking you in a different direction than you originally planned. Just don’t let it get too far off track!
  5. DO NOT edit as you go: Resist the temptation to edit your work as you write. Instead, focus on getting your ideas on paper and worry about editing later.
  6. Maintain your momentum: Try to write every day or on a regular schedule to maintain your momentum and keep your creativity flowing.

Writing Assignment #6: The First Draft
