Unreliable Narrator by Araminta Hall: A literary thriller about the stories we tell ourselves

What if the story that ruined your life wasn’t the one that actually happened? Araminta Hall’s Unreliable Narrator begins with the promise of a psychological thriller, but what unfolds is something even more interesting: a deeply literary examination of memory, guilt, identity, and the stories people construct to survive. While there are certainly moments of suspense, readers looking for a fast-paced thriller may find themselves surprised by the novel’s quieter, more introspective approach. Personally, I think that’s exactly where the book shines.

Ten years after the violent end to a summer spent working as assistant to celebrated novelist Ambrose “Rosie” Glencourt at the isolated Shadowlands estate, Hope Jenkins has resigned herself to a lonely existence. Convinced she deserves the life she’s living, she numbs herself with alcohol and isolation—until she discovers that Rosie’s bestselling novel is, in essence, her own life story. Not only has he exposed the darkest secret she’s carried for a decade, but he’s profited from it and is preparing to tell the story all over again. From there, Hall explores not simply what happened at Shadowlands, but how everyone involved has rewritten the past to suit themselves.

Home Sick by Rhiannon Grist: An unforgettable haunted house story that loses its nerve

Some horror novels know exactly how to get under your skin—until they decide to explain themselves. Unfortunately, Home Sick by Rhiannon Grist is one of them. Releasing July 14, 2026, Home Sick begins as one of the freshest psychological horror novels I’ve read in quite some time. Combining eerie Scottish folklore, an unsettling haunted house, and an unreliable narrator whose own emotional instability makes every strange occurrence suspect, the novel creates an atmosphere thick with dread. For roughly three-quarters of the book, I was completely invested.

After a violent incident at work, Tamsin escapes to a secluded cottage in the Scottish countryside, hoping distance will allow her to reinvent herself. Instead, she discovers that her isolated retreat shares a wall with a mysterious neighbor whose shifting personality and unnerving smile make her impossible to ignore. As increasingly bizarre disturbances plague the house, local legends begin to blur with Tamsin’s growing paranoia, leaving both her—and the reader—questioning what is real.

The Season of Sinking by Daphne Woolsoncroft: A haunting thriller about obsession, secrets, and the dangers lurking close to home

What if someone knew everything about you—but you had no idea they even existed? Daphne Woolsoncroft’s The Season of Sinking is the kind of psychological thriller that feeds on that unsettling possibility. Equal parts mystery, suspense, and creeping dread, this debut novel from the popular true crime podcaster transforms an idyllic lakeside town into a place where every glance feels suspicious and every memory hides something dangerous beneath the surface.

Set against the backdrop of a picturesque Washington community, The Season of Sinking follows Imogen Bly as she returns to her hometown of Lake Blair after her mother’s sudden death. Accompanied by her twin sister Amelia, Imogen expects a painful but straightforward task: sorting through their mother’s belongings and preparing the family home for sale. Instead, she finds herself confronted by old fears, strange occurrences, and the lingering sense that something has always been deeply wrong about the place she once called home.
