Finishing a novel is an incredible accomplishment—but if you’re anything like most writers, you’re already thinking about the next one. That’s why the final step in this series on the steps of the novel writing process is simple but essential: repeat the process.

Writing your first novel teaches you a lot. You learn what sparks your creativity, where you tend to get stuck, and which tools and strategies actually help you move forward. As you begin your second (or fifth or tenth) book, you get to carry all that hard-earned knowledge with you. Take what worked from this series and leave what didn’t. There’s no one right way to write a novel—but with each project, you can refine your own.
You might find it helpful to streamline your process over time. Maybe outlining helped you stay on track, or maybe freewriting unlocked better scenes. Maybe sprinting worked wonders, or maybe slow and steady got the job done. Each book will shape your approach to the next, making your workflow more efficient and your storytelling more confident.
Personally, I like to keep two novels going at once. That way, if I hit a wall or need to let one project rest (or “compost,” as I like to say), I have something else to turn to. That space away often helps me come back with a fresh perspective.
Another key to sustaining a writing practice over the long term? Find a schedule that works for you. It doesn’t have to be daily or even weekly, but it should be consistent enough to keep you moving. Whether you’re an early-morning writer, a weekend warrior, or someone squeezing in words during lunch breaks, momentum comes from routine.
And remember: if you ever get stuck while working on your next novel, you can always return to this series for a refresher. These posts are here to help you get unstuck, re-inspired, and back on track.
Writing a novel isn’t just a one-time thing—it’s a cycle. The more you go through it, the more confident, creative, and capable you become. So, take a deep breath, celebrate how far you’ve come, and then… start again.

Book Summary
When Jack Utley loses his daughter just as his business is about to soar, it seems he’s traded financial gain for Callie’s life. After an encounter with a mysterious woman on the eve of Callie’s funeral, Jack wakes up to find that time has somehow rewound to the morning of Callie’s accident. Jack gets an opportunity that most grieving parents can only dream of – he saves his daughter’s life.
Now that Jack has been forced to reflect on everything he has to lose, he resolves to do better. He’s determined to spend more time at home with his family and repair the relationships that have suffered over the years while he’s been so focused on work. But as Callie’s behavior becomes increasingly bizarre, Jack realizes he has a lot more room to improve than he realized – and it might be too late to save his daughter after all.
