What boys learn: A tense, unsettling dive into the stories we tell about boys, mothers, and the damage we inherit

When harmful behavior can be traced to both inherited traits and toxic social conditioning, how do we decide what someone is accountable for—and what they never had a fair chance to escape? In What Boys Learn, Andromeda Romano-Lax drops readers straight into a suburb reeling from the deaths of two teenage girls—an event that quietly but steadily unravels high school counselor Abby Rosso’s sense of safety, certainty, and trust. As whispers begin to circle her son, Benjamin, Abby finds herself confronting the possibility she’s spent years refusing to consider: that the child she loves might be capable of terrible violence.

The novel builds its tension through the push and pull between nature and nurture, a question Abby can’t escape. She recognizes in Benjamin flashes of the same coldness and manipulation she once saw in her brother—signs she’s tried to explain away, signs she hoped wouldn’t repeat themselves in the next generation. But Benjamin’s childhood looked nothing like the one she and Ewan endured. If something darker is taking root in him, Abby wonders whether it comes from genetics, from the world around him, or from the places in her parenting where she turned away instead of looking closely.

The Wind Witch Murders by Casey Dunn — A haunting coming-of-age in southern gothic

The whole town was just waiting for the death of the Wind Witch before moving forward, and it held Raven back all along. In The Wind Witch Murders by Casey Dunn, that tension becomes the engine of a story about inheritance, fear, and the struggle to claim your own life when everyone around you believes they have a right to it.

Raven has grown up under the heavy hand of her devout Christian grandmother, the woman who took her in after her mother, Deanne, was convicted of the ritualistic murders of two boys. Deanne never confessed, never explained, and never stopped haunting the edges of Raven’s identity. Now that she’s dead, the town seems to exhale—almost as if it had been waiting for permission to move on. But Raven doesn’t get that luxury. Not when a stranger places a single feather on her mother’s casket, a quiet signal that whatever Deanne was mixed up in is still alive.

Everyone in the Group Chat Dies by L.M. Chilton: A silly, chaotic thriller with flashes of humor and horror

Kirby Cornell just wants a break—from her crumbling apartment in sleepy Crowhurst, her dead-end job, her sleazy landlord, messy roommates, and most of all, the terrible thing they all did. But when a message pops up in her old group chat saying, “Everyone in the group chat dies,” from her ex-roommate Esme—who died twelve months ago—her life quickly spirals into chaos. This is the premise of L.M. Chilton’s Everyone in the Group Chat Dies, an ironic thriller that fuses TikTok-obsessed true crime investigation with a ’90s serial killer mystery. The book releases December 9, 2025.

This book leans into silliness, bordering on absurd, which will delight readers who enjoy quirky, offbeat thrillers. The fast-paced banter among characters evokes the vibe of The Gilmore Girls, though I personally found it more exhausting than charming. Horror fans will also recognize echoes of films like Scream, with moments of gruesomeness framed for comedy rather than tension.

The end of the year is often a time for reflection, connection, and a little cozy escape — whether that’s in a favorite chair with a cup of tea or curled up under a blanket while the world rushes by. This season, I’ve rounded up a mix of books I’ve reviewed that are perfect for December reading, from thought-provoking literary stories to chills that aren’t just from the winter air.

After the End by Barbara Abel: a chilling domestic thriller where fate refuses to stay buried

If you’ve ever wondered how the past can lie dormant for years before roaring back to life, After the End by Barbara Abel shows exactly how a single move, a single neighbor, or a single meddling ex-husband can crack open every secret you thought you’d buried. Though this book is technically a sequel to Mothers’ Instinct, it stands completely on its own—I never once felt as though I were missing context from the first novel. (That said, this story was so gripping that I may go back and read the earlier book anyway.) This one, translated from French, releases December 9, 2025 in the U.S.

Abel builds the tension slowly and deftly, layering each moment with a sense of inevitability—as though Fate itself is pushing the characters toward a collision neither they nor the reader can avoid. Recently divorced Nora Depardieu hopes her new home will give her and her children the fresh start they need. What she doesn’t realize is that the Geniots—Tiphaine and Sylvain—once lived in the very unit she has just moved into. Eight years earlier, a devastating crime occurred next door, in the home the Geniots now occupy. After the tragedy, they became their neighbors’ son, Milo’s, guardians and moved into his house, leaving their old half of the building empty…until Nora arrives.

The Day I Lost You by Ruth Mancini: A gripping, twist-driven custody thriller about secrets, sacrifice, and what we owe our children

In this twisty thriller, releasing December 2, 2025, Mancini blends psychological suspense with a deeply human question: when two women each believe they’re the rightful mother of one little boy, how do you determine what justice actually looks like?

Dark Sisters by Kristi DeMeester: A fierce, feminist horror that burns with rage—though not always with realism

Kristi DeMeester’s Dark Sisters (releasing December 9, 2025) takes on patriarchal power, religious hypocrisy, and generational trauma with fire, blood, and no small dose of feminine fury—but sometimes the blaze feels more like stage lighting than wildfire. It’s the kind of novel that makes you want to light a match and watch the patriarchy burn. The first thing you need to know about Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino is that it’s about far more than real estate. Yes, the book follows 37-year-old publicist Margo Miyake as she becomes dangerously fixated on buying the perfect house in an impossibly competitive Washington, DC housing market—but Kashino turns what could have been a simple story about bidding wars into a biting, darkly funny character study of ambition and envy.
