The holidays are supposed to be a time of joy and connection, but for many of us, they also bring a whirlwind of obligations: family gatherings, travel, shopping, cooking, and endless to-do lists. Amid the chaos, finding time to write, read, or simply pause can feel impossible. Yet even during the busiest season of the year, it’s possible to carve out moments for creativity and reflection—if you approach it with intention and compassion.

- Set smaller, achievable goals: When life is hectic, long writing sessions or ambitious reading lists can feel overwhelming. Break your projects into smaller, manageable chunks. Write for twenty minutes in the morning, read a chapter before bed, or jot down ideas in a notebook while sipping your coffee. Small, consistent efforts often add up more than you realize—and they keep your creative momentum alive.
- Create a “comfort reads” list: Holidays are an ideal time to turn to books that are comforting, familiar, or uplifting. Keep a list of titles that make you feel grounded, nostalgic, or inspired. Reading can be a quiet sanctuary during stressful days, helping you recharge both mentally and emotionally. Even a short story or a single chapter can offer that restorative pause.
- Use short bursts to write or reflect: You don’t need long stretches of uninterrupted time to be productive. Ten-minute bursts of writing, journaling, or brainstorming can be surprisingly effective. Set a timer, focus fully for a brief period, and then step away guilt-free. Over time, these micro-sessions accumulate into meaningful progress.
- Reframe the season as inspiration, not interruption: Instead of seeing the holiday rush as a barrier to creativity, consider it a source of inspiration. Observe the sights, sounds, and emotions around you—the warm light of candles, the smell of fresh-baked pies, the rhythm of family traditions. These sensory experiences can feed your writing or enrich your reading, offering new perspectives and ideas.
The holidays don’t have to derail your creative habits or reading life. With intention, flexibility, and self-compassion, you can protect your focus, savor your favorite stories, and draw inspiration from the season itself. Even amidst the noise, there is always space to write, read, and reflect.
