Getting your novel published by a traditional publisher can feel like an ambitious dream, but with preparation and perseverance, it is achievable. Traditional publishing involves partnering with an established publishing house, such as Penguin Random House or HarperCollins, which takes on the responsibility of editing, designing, marketing, and distributing your book.

Unlike independent publishing, where authors take on much of this work themselves, traditional publishers typically pay an advance and earn their profits through book sales, splitting royalties with the author. If your goal is to see your book on bookstore shelves with the backing of an experienced team, check out the following general steps to getting your novel published by a traditional publisher:
- Finish writing and revising your novel: Make sure your manuscript is polished and in its best possible form before submitting it to publishers.
- Research literary agents: Literary agents act as a liaison between authors and publishers, helping to sell books and negotiate contracts. Research agents who represent books in your genre and submit query letters to those who are a good fit.
- Submit query letters and sample chapters: Craft a strong query letter that includes a brief synopsis of your novel, your writing credentials, and an offer to send sample chapters on request. Follow each agent’s submission guidelines carefully.
- Wait for responses: Be patient, as it may take several weeks or months to receive responses. If an agent is interested, they will likely request to read the full manuscript.
- Work with an agent to revise and pitch your manuscript: If an agent agrees to represent you, they may ask for revisions to your manuscript and will help to pitch it to publishers.
- Negotiate a contract: If a publisher is interested in your manuscript, the agent will negotiate a publishing contract on your behalf.
- Work with an editor: Once the contract is signed, you will work with an editor to further revise and polish your manuscript for publication.
- Cover design, formatting, and printing: The publisher will handle cover design, formatting, and printing of your book.
- Marketing and promotion: The publisher will promote your book through various channels, such as book reviews, social media, and book signings. However, authors must often assist with these book promotions.
- Release and distribution: Your book will be released and distributed to bookstores and online retailers.
Keep in mind that the publishing process can be lengthy, and there is no guarantee of acceptance. If getting your novel published by a traditional publisher is important to you, then it’s essential to be persistent and continue to hone your craft while you wait for responses.
