Desperation, dark humor, and a wildly tangled web of secrets collide in Mrs. Shim Is a Killer by Kang Jiyoung, a novel that transforms a grieving widow’s fight for survival into something far more unexpected—and undeniably entertaining.
Mrs. Shim is simply trying to keep her family afloat after losing both her husband and her job at a butcher shop. But when she answers a vague job listing and discovers her knife skills are needed for something far more dangerous, her life takes a sharp turn into the world of contract killing. What follows is less a straightforward thriller and more a darkly comedic descent into chaos, where misunderstandings, hidden motives, and unlikely connections drive the story forward.

One of the most striking elements of this novel is its tone. There’s an almost slapstick quality to the violence and the situations Mrs. Shim finds herself in, giving the story a surreal edge. The idea that her transition from butcher to assassin feels oddly natural is part of the book’s charm—it leans fully into its premise and invites the reader to do the same.
The novel also takes an ambitious approach to storytelling. With two competing “detective agencies” operating as fronts for their killing businesses, the narrative introduces a wide range of characters whose lives intersect in unexpected ways. At times, the structure feels like a series of interconnected short stories, gradually revealing how everyone is tied to Mrs. Shim. It creates a layered reading experience where connections unfold over time, rewarding patience as the bigger picture comes into focus.
There’s also a deeper undercurrent running beneath the humor. Many of the characters come from difficult beginnings, and while the novel doesn’t dwell heavily on sentimentality, it offers glimpses into how circumstance and survival can shape a person’s path. These moments add texture to what might otherwise be purely absurd, grounding the story just enough to make its world feel cohesive in its own unique way.
That said, this is very much a novel that embraces complexity. The large cast, shifting perspectives, and use of nicknames and descriptors over consistent names can make the reading experience feel intentionally disorienting at times. But for readers willing to let go of needing every detail neatly organized, that unpredictability becomes part of the appeal. It’s a story that asks you to lean into the confusion and trust that the connections will reveal themselves—eventually.

And when they do, there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing how intricately everything has been woven together, even if not every thread ties off in a perfectly neat bow. The novel’s translated nature also adds an extra layer of intrigue, offering a glimpse into storytelling rhythms and stylistic choices that may feel refreshingly different from more familiar structures.
Ultimately, Mrs. Shim Is a Killer is a fast-moving, darkly humorous thriller that thrives on its own chaos. It’s not about precision—it’s about momentum, tone, and the strange, compelling journey of a woman who discovers she’s far more capable than anyone (including herself) ever expected.
If you enjoy dark comedies, unconventional thrillers, and stories with large, interconnected casts, this one is worth picking up. It’s especially well-suited for readers who don’t mind a bit of narrative complexity and are open to translated fiction that plays with structure and tone in unexpected ways.
