Author interview with war/horror writer John Milas

John Milas’ novel, The Militia House, is inspired by a portion of his experience deployed to Afghanistan. He says, “The book is a horror novel because I found the war to be scary amidst a branch of service and mostly an entire country of people (the U.S.) who were not afraid of the war. My goal was to make the war scary for readers. We’re too conditioned to accept war as a norm to actually feel afraid of realistic portrayals of war. It’s like asking someone to play Call of Duty and seriously reflect on the nature of killing. It’s not going to happen.”

John Milas is a writer from Illinois. His debut novel, The Militia House (Henry Holt, 2023), was nominated for a 2023 Shirley Jackson Award, longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize, and additionally recognized by Indies Introduce, Indie Next, and The Audacious Book Club. He received a Walter E. Dakin fellowship to attend the Sewanee Writers’ Conference in 2024.

Spooktober Book Review: So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison

Rachel Harrison’s vampire novel So Thirsty is by far my most favorite horror(ish) read this #Spooktober! It is a thrilling exploration of female empowerment, friendship, and the darker sides of human nature, wrapped in a vampire tale that is both bloody and thought-provoking. The story centers around Sloane Parker, a woman dissatisfied with her life, including her failing marriage and stagnant sense of self. When a birthday getaway with her impulsive best friend Naomi takes a wild turn, the two women are transformed—literally and metaphorically—into vampires. This transformation forces them to confront their dissatisfaction with life, their friendship, and their buried desires.

So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison is so far my favorite #Spooktober read of 2024!

Author interview with horror author N.J. Gallegos

N.J. Gallegos is an Emergency Medicine Physician by day, horror author by night. Her freshman novel, The Broken Heart, follows an abused housewife who receives a heart transplant from a serial killer (hide all knives before reading). This Oct. 15th, her medical horror thriller, The Fatal Mind, drops. Other works include: Just Desserts (winner of an American Legacy Book Award in the Psychological Horror category), Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires, It’s Me, Hi, I’m the Zombie, it’s Me, and more. Catch her on The Scream Kings Podcast talking all things horror. Gallegos lives in Illinois with her wife and two cats. In her spare time, she enjoys binging reality tv (especially Bravo), brewing beer, and running while listening to EDM so she can drink said brewed beer.

Q: What is the first book that made you cry?

A: Where the Red Fern Grows. As someone who was absolutely obsessed with my cat, the idea of losing her gutted me. The book was my first brush with mortality and made me realize the impermanence of all things.

Q: Does writing energize or exhaust you?

Author interview with horror writer Matthew Lutton

A master of horror, Matthew Lutton is the author of 10 Drink Minimum (2022) and Candy Dish (2023).

Q: When did you first catch the writing bug? What drove you to persist?

A:  I had written when I was younger and enjoyed telling stories. I was driving a lot for work and would listen to audiobooks on my drive, and then I would start to write my own endings to the stories. Some would be better in my head than the actual ones so I decided to try writing some short stories, and my coworkers seemed to really like them.

Q: What/who were your early literary influences, and how do you think their writing has shaped you as a storyteller today?

A: I have always been a big Clive Barker guy. Just the way that he can make grotesque stuff sound beautiful. Chuck Palahniuk is another huge one. I have always said if it makes you uncomfortable it’s horror, and he’s the master of that.
