In The Missing Half, two women connected by tragedy team up to uncover the truth about their missing sisters—and what they find is far darker than either expected. Ashley Flowers, best known as the host of the Crime Junkie podcast, delivers another haunting mystery in The Missing Half, a New York Times bestseller that blends emotional depth with a compelling, small-town suspense plot.

The story follows Nicole “Nic” Monroe, a twenty-four-year-old still reeling from the disappearance of her older sister, Kasey, seven years earlier. When Jenna Connor, whose own sister vanished under eerily similar circumstances, reaches out, the two women form an uneasy bond rooted in shared grief—and a mutual determination to find answers.
What makes this story so engaging isn’t just the mystery, but the emotional undercurrent of sisterhood running through it. Both Nic and Jenna grew up in difficult homes, and their sisters were their anchors. As Nic and Jenna grow closer, their relationship begins to mirror that of sisters themselves, which adds a touching and deeply human layer to the narrative. I actually expected the book to lean more heavily into that emotional bond—to become a story about two women finding solace and family in each other—but that’s not where Flowers ultimately took it. Personally, I think that direction might have made for a stronger emotional payoff.
Still, Flowers’s writing is sharp and immersive, and her experience as a storyteller in the true crime space clearly shines through. The pacing is tight, the atmosphere moody, and the sense of dread builds beautifully as secrets begin to unravel. But the ending? Let’s just say it threw me. It was shocking—definitely not the resolution I saw coming—and while some readers might appreciate the boldness of that twist, I found myself a little frustrated. There was a definite “Wait, what? Did you really have to go and do that?” moment for me.
Overall, The Missing Half is a gripping read with great writing and strong emotional stakes. Even if the ending didn’t land for me, the journey there absolutely did. Fans of Gillian Flynn and true crime-inspired fiction will likely find this one hard to put down.
