Some thrillers hook you with the crime itself, but Jennifer Fawcett’s Keep This for Me lingers because of the questions it raises about what we inherit from our families—by blood, by silence, and by circumstance.

The story begins in 1993 when Fiona Green’s mother, Ana, disappears after a roadside abduction by Eddie Ward, a truck driver later revealed to be a prolific serial killer. Although authorities uncover a mass grave of his victims, Ana’s body is never found. Thirty years later, Eddie Ward is on his deathbed and insists he didn’t kill Ana, leaving Fiona with more questions than answers. Returning to her hometown, she finds herself reliving the past when another young woman vanishes—and this time, suspicion falls on Jason Ward, Eddie’s son.
At its heart, this is a novel about the uneasy tension between nature and nurture. If your father is a serial killer, does that mean you’re destined to follow in his footsteps? Jason grows up under the constant shadow of suspicion, treated by his community as a predator in waiting. Fawcett asks a haunting question: if Jason were to become violent, would some of the blame belong to those who always expected him to? The novel suggests that identity is not fixed by blood alone, but by the choices we make—and the way we are seen and treated by others.
Fawcett also weaves in another kind of inheritance: mental illness. Fiona suffers from postpartum psychosis, only to discover her mother struggled with the same condition decades earlier. The tragedy lies not just in Ana’s disappearance, but in her silence. Fear of judgment and even legal repercussions kept her from confiding in her husband or doctor. Fiona is left without the guidance of her mother’s experience at the very moment she needs it most. Through this parallel, Fawcett highlights how often women endure these struggles alone, cut off from the possibility of comfort and understanding.
Keep This for Me is more than a suspense novel—it’s an exploration of generational shadows, the stigma around mental health, and the precarious line between who we are and who we fear we might become. The crimes and mysteries keep the pages turning, but it’s the emotional depth and moral questions that linger long after the last chapter.
