When a mother disappears, everyone’s a suspect: She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena

What if your spouse vanished in the middle of an ordinary day, leaving behind their car, keys, phone—and no trace of where they went? That’s the unsettling setup of She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena, a novel that blends true crime grit with domestic suspense.

Lapena’s latest reads differently than her earlier thrillers. This one feels more like a police procedural with a true crime edge, pulling readers into the investigation from both the detectives’ perspective and the world of amateur sleuths. I was especially intrigued by the way she wove in the true crime ecosystem—neighbors rushing to post their theories in Facebook groups, family members consuming crime podcasts for clues. Bryden’s sister, Lizzie, is a true crime addict who inserts herself into the search, raising an uncomfortable question: do amateur sleuths actually help an investigation, or do they only spread speculation that leads investigators off track?

Speaking of Bryden—the name threw me off. It’s so close to “Brayden” that I kept thinking it was a male character at first. Honestly, I don’t understand why authors saddle their characters with invented names that add nothing to the story. This character is a white suburban mom; she could just as easily have been an Olivia or a Kate. Maybe this is just my personal pet peeve, but I’d love to know—do character names ever bother you the way this one did me?

Aside from that hiccup, the novel kept me hooked. There are plenty of red herrings, some convincing suspects, and even a side character who wasn’t given much suspicion but who I couldn’t help wishing was guilty. I don’t even know why—I just wanted them to go to jail. That speaks to Lapena’s ability to make every character feel a little suspect, even when they’re on the sidelines.

What lingers most, though, is the reminder of how dangerous it is to be a woman in a world that doesn’t value women’s lives the way it should. When a mother who loves her family can be murdered, and the suspect list is still a mile long, it forces us to face the unsettling truth: there are far too many people capable of cruelty, and you never really know when you’re standing next to one.

She Didn’t See It Coming may not be Lapena’s twistiest novel, but it’s a smart, engrossing one that kept me guessing right up to the end. If you like your thrillers with a true crime flavor and plenty of suspects to sort through, this one’s worth the read.
