Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney: A thriller that keeps you guessing

Some thrillers keep you hooked with breakneck pacing, while others lure you in with a slow burn that seeps under your skin. Alice Feeney’s Beautiful Ugly does both. This is the kind of novel where you tell yourself, “Just one more chapter,” only to find yourself still turning pages deep into the night. With a mix of tension, unreliable narration, and a chilling atmosphere, Beautiful Ugly cements Feeney’s reputation as the Queen of Twists.

The novel follows Grady Green, an author whose life falls apart when his wife, Abby, disappears without a trace. One moment, he’s on the phone with her, listening as she pulls over her car. The next, she’s gone—her car abandoned by a cliff, her phone still inside. A year later, Grady is drowning in grief and writer’s block when he flees to a remote Scottish island in hopes of rebuilding his life. But his fragile reality shatters when he sees a woman who looks exactly like Abby. From there, the novel spirals into a tangled web of memory, identity, and revenge.

Feeney masterfully plays with reader expectations, particularly through Grady’s character. At first, he’s the grieving husband, a man we sympathize with as he desperately searches for answers. But as the story unfolds, small cracks appear in his narrative. Doubt creeps in. Could he be hiding something? Could he be lying—to us, to himself? Feeney expertly manipulates our instincts, making us want to believe him, even when warning signs flash in front of us. The novel’s feminist undertones are hard to ignore—reminding us how often women are conditioned to give men the benefit of the doubt, even when the evidence suggests we shouldn’t.

The novel’s Scottish island setting is more than just a backdrop—it’s an integral part of the story’s mood. Isolated, rugged, and eerie, it mirrors Grady’s unraveling mind. Feeney’s descriptions of the remote cabin in the woods, the tiny corner shop serving the island’s twenty-five inhabitants, and the wild beauty of the landscape make you want to escape to this misty, windswept world—if only you weren’t so sure something sinister lurked beneath the surface.

Beautiful Ugly is a thriller that keeps its promises. It’s gripping, atmospheric, and packed with twists that will make you question everything you think you know about the characters. If you love dark psychological thrillers with unreliable narrators and deeply satisfying reveals, this book should be at the top of your reading list.

Now that Jack has been forced to reflect on everything he has to lose, he resolves to do better. He’s determined to spend more time at home with his family and repair the relationships that have suffered over the years while he’s been so focused on work.
