Have you ever fantasized about taking justice into your own hands—especially when the system seems designed to fail women at every turn? If so, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano might just be the wickedly fun, laugh-out-loud escape you need.

Cosimano delivers a fresh, fast-paced mystery with a side of dark humor, following the misadventures of Finlay Donovan, a struggling novelist and overwhelmed single mom. Between her looming book deadline, her ex-husband’s antics, the loss of her nanny, and a hair-related emergency with her four-year-old, Finlay’s life is already teetering on the edge. But when she’s mistakenly assumed to be a contract killer while meeting with her agent at Panera, she finds herself in over her head—way over her head—in a real-life murder plot.
While I’ve recently been drawn to stories about women making bad things happen to bad guys, this one leans more toward cozy mystery than the gritty thrillers I’ve devoured before. The humor is sharp, the dialogue sparkles with a Gilmore Girls-esque rapid-fire wit, and the story unfolds as a delightful comedy of errors. Every twist and turn had me grinning, even as I rooted for Finlay to somehow survive the chaos unscathed.
What elevates this book beyond just a fun romp is its subtle but pointed critique of the patriarchy. Finlay’s ex-husband is a textbook example of the selfish, entitled man-child who assumes his younger new fiancé will step in to handle his responsibilities once he takes full custody of the kids. Throughout the novel, Finlay’s ex dangles the threat of taking her children away from her over her head as he manipulates her to do what he wants.
Sadly, the ex is far from the worst offender in this story—Cosimano sprinkles in a variety of men who underestimate, dismiss, and outright endanger women, making Finlay’s accidental descent into crime feel almost justified. The novel playfully nudges readers to consider: if society refuses to protect women, who will? And if women take matters into their own hands, at what point do they become the villains?
For fans of humorous mysteries with a feminist edge, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a must-read. It’s the perfect blend of crime, chaos, and comedy, and it kicks off a series that promises even more delightful misadventures. If you’ve read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! What’s your take—does Finlay cross the line, or is she simply doing what needs to be done?
