Book Review: Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda

Megan Miranda’s Daughter of Mine is a haunting exploration of secrets long buried—both in the depths of Mirror Lake and within the lives of its characters. With an eerie atmosphere and tightly woven suspense, Miranda masterfully intertwines a gripping mystery with timely themes of family, climate change, and the dangers of making assumptions.

Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda

The novel begins with Hazel Sharp returning to Mirror Lake, a town she left behind nearly a decade ago, after inheriting her childhood home from her father, Detective Perry Holt. Hazel’s return coincides with an unprecedented drought, which lowers the lake’s water level and unearths a rusted car, potentially holding answers to her mother’s mysterious disappearance.

The chilling note her mother left behind years ago—addressed only to “Daughter of Mine”—looms large over Hazel’s life, as does her father’s puzzling decision to exclude her two brothers, Gage and Caden, from his will. The family dynamic crackles with tension, mirroring the ever-present storm clouds hovering over Mirror Lake. Miranda’s choice to structure the story in four parts—Father, Mother, Daughter, and Sons—adds depth and dimension to the unraveling mystery, peeling back layers of the characters’ relationships and histories.

A Mystery Rooted in the Climate Crisis

At its core, Daughter of Mine is more than a tale of familial secrets—it’s a climate change novel. The receding waters of Mirror Lake serve as a powerful metaphor, highlighting how the natural world can no longer hide the scars of human neglect. Just as skeletons emerge from the lakebed, long-buried truths rise to the surface, forcing the characters to confront both the consequences of their actions and the narratives they’ve chosen to believe.

The novel draws a subtle yet poignant parallel between ignoring the environment’s warnings and burying the past. Both have a way of catching up to us, often in devastating ways. As the drought tightens its grip on Mirror Lake, the tension in the story rises, creating a sense of foreboding that mirrors the slow build of a coming storm.

Assumptions and Misjudgments

Miranda also critiques how quickly people form judgments, believing they know the full story when they only see fragments of the truth. Hazel’s return to Mirror Lake subjects her to whispers and stares from a community that thinks it understands her family’s history. As the story unfolds, however, it becomes clear that no one—not even Hazel—has all the pieces. This theme resonates on a personal and societal level, inviting readers to reflect on their own biases and assumptions.

Daughter of Mine is a spellbinding novel that lingers long after the final page. Megan Miranda’s evocative prose and ability to build tension make this a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and mysteries. It’s a story that reminds us of the weight of our secrets, the power of nature, and the importance of facing the truths we’d rather leave buried.
