Lisa Unger’s novel, Christmas Presents, is the perfect blend of cozy holiday charm and chilling suspense. Set against the backdrop of a quaint bookshop in a snow-dusted small town, the novel invites readers to unravel a decade-old mystery alongside Madeline Martin, the sole survivor of a brutal attack.

The story begins when Harley Granger, a notorious true crime podcaster, arrives in Madeline’s bookstore just days before Christmas. Known as much for his fame and wealth as for his controversial tactics, Granger is on a mission to reexamine the horrific events that forever altered Madeline’s life.
Evan Handy, the man convicted of the murders of Madeline’s best friend and two missing sisters, has been imprisoned for years. But with a string of recent disappearances mimicking Handy’s crimes, Granger poses an unsettling question: could the real killer still be out there?
Madeline’s reluctance to revisit her trauma clashes with Granger’s determination to uncover the truth, creating a gripping tension that propels the narrative. As a blizzard looms, secrets long buried in the snow begin to surface, leading to a jaw-dropping revelation that left me questioning everything I thought I knew about the story.
Unger masterfully balances a cozy, atmospheric setting with the psychological depth and suspense that has become her trademark. The bookshop, twinkling with holiday lights, serves as an ironic counterpoint to the darkness of the plot, highlighting the contrast between the warmth of the season and the chilling nature of the mystery.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Christmas Presents is the inclusion of a true crime podcaster as a central figure. In recent years, this trope has gained popularity, reflecting the cultural obsession with podcasts that delve into real-life mysteries. True crime podcasters bring a modern, meta angle to the genre, questioning the ethics of sensationalizing tragedy while simultaneously driving the plot forward. Harley Granger is a prime example of this duality—both compelling and controversial, his presence forces the characters (and readers) to grapple with uncomfortable truths.
Christmas Presents is a gripping tale of resilience, redemption, and the cost of uncovering the truth. Unger’s ability to weave complex characters with a suspenseful plot makes this a must-read for fans of psychological thrillers and seasonal mysteries alike.
