Maintaining a consistent point of view (POV) is important in novel writing because it helps create a clear and immersive narrative for the reader. When a story’s POV changes frequently or unexpectedly, it can be jarring for the reader and disrupt their engagement with the story. POV is such an important element to tackle during the revise and refine stage of the novel writing process, you may find it useful to do a complete read-through of your manuscript with your attention focused solely on spotting POV shifts.

Below are a few reasons why it is so important to maintain consistent POV(s) in your novel:
- Clarity: Using a consistent POV helps clarify the perspective from which the story is being told. This can help the reader understand the events and characters more easily and prevent confusion. A consistent POV helps readers stay oriented within the narrative. When the story adheres to one character’s perspective, readers gain a clear understanding of that character’s thoughts, feelings, and motivations, reducing confusion that can arise from shifting viewpoints (sometimes referred to as head hopping.)
- Immersion: When the reader becomes immersed in a story, they can begin to see the world through the eyes of the character. A consistent POV helps maintain this immersion, allowing the reader to fully engage with the story. It creates a coherent and cohesive world, where all the sensory details and internal monologues align with the protagonist’s experience, making the fictional world feel more real and engaging.
- Character development: Consistent POV can also help with character development. By using a single POV, the author can focus on developing the thoughts, emotions, and motivations of a particular character, making them feel more real and relatable to the reader.
- Deepened Connection: Maintaining a single POV allows readers to develop a deeper connection with the protagonist. Readers experience events, emotions, and conflicts through the protagonist’s eyes, which fosters empathy and a stronger emotional bond with the character.
- Focused Narrative Voice: A consistent POV reinforces the narrative voice and style. Whether it’s first-person or third person limited, the voice remains steady, which helps in establishing a distinct tone and maintaining a specific narrative style throughout the story.
- Controlled Revelation of Information: When a story sticks to a single POV, the author controls the flow of information more effectively. Readers only know what the protagonist knows, which can build suspense and maintain mystery. This can also aid in plot development, as information is revealed in a way that aligns with the protagonist’s journey.
- Avoidance of Disorientation: Frequent shifts in POV can disorient readers and disrupt the narrative flow. Consistency helps in maintaining a smooth and coherent storyline, allowing readers to follow the plot without becoming confused or losing track of the narrative thread.
- Tone and style: Different POVs can create different tones and styles. For example, first-person POV can create a more personal and intimate tone, while third-person omniscient POV can create a more objective and distant tone. By using a consistent POV, the author can maintain a consistent tone and style throughout the story.
Consistent POV is important because it helps create a clear and engaging narrative, develop characters, and maintain a consistent tone and style. A consistent point of view enhances the reader’s engagement with the story, providing a clear, immersive, and emotionally resonant experience. Thus, it is an essential element to address during the revise and refine stage of the novel writing process.
