Writing a novel is like putting together a blank puzzle on whose pieces you must paint portions of a picture one at a time while simultaneously trying to figure out how to fit the freshly painted pieces together.

…my protagonists sharing their adventures with me.
I will overhear a bit of conversation in my head, then go for a long walk so I can continue to listen to them talk and figure out who they are, what’s up with them. Then when I get to my notebook, I scribble furiously and try to get down as much as possible before I lose it. If only there were some sort of device that could record the voices we hear in our heads!
