I like to build websites. No, I am not a website designer. I have a basic understanding of HTML, but I am in no way “experienced” with it. The type of websites I like to build are WYSIWYG websites like those you can create for free using Weebly.com and similar content management systems (CMS). These systems are so easy to use, I don’t know why every small business or non-profit doesn’t have a website. But then again, I guess they probably don’t have a thorough understanding of how best to set up a simple site in a way that will draw traffic. Maybe they think it’s too complicated to even think about doing it themselves. I think they’re wrong. So, I thought maybe I’d write an ebook about it.
The book I’m writing will be short and sweet. It will not be an intimidating tome designed to scare small business owners into shelling out the money to hire a high-priced web designer. I want to write something simple that the average person can follow. I want you to be able to have your website up and running in less than a month. And, I want you to be able to do it all by yourself! This will be an interesting experiment for me. Right now, I’m creating my ebook in a Word document, and I plan to offer free downloads of the book here on my blog.
Why do this for free? To be perfectly honest, it’s not only just to help you. For me, this is something of a resume builder. I want to use the ebook to showcase a variety of my talents. This is something I will be able to show to future clients so they can get a good overview of both my website building skills and my technical writing skills. I’m writing this ebook (and have ideas for a few more when this one is done) to sharpen my competitive edge.
I think this is something a lot of people don’t realize they can do. No, you don’t have to write an ebook, but most of us have some type of skill that could be easily showcased in some type of tangible format that may then be presented to a future employer.
I think too many people today rely solely on the traditional resume when looking for a job. In my opinion, that is a huge mistake. The competition is too stiff. You can’t keep relying on traditional methods in a job market that is no longer traditional. You have to think of new ways to showcase your talents and grab the attention of potential employers and clients.

Write on the World 
Creating an ebook about building websites is a great idea. There really is no reason why any business should be without a site. When people are looking for a type of business, they’re going to the Google search engine, not the phone book.
